What the gang over at Poster Spy are doing with the website and these contests is providing a great platform for emerging and established artists and, crucially, ensuring that these artists are not exploited. It’s rare to find this type of design contest that aren’t just spec work, but at Poster Spy they’re creating genuine opportunities for artists to get their work out there with the backing of studios and networks.
I feel like myself and other designers enjoy these contests as it’s an opportunity to shake loose, maybe try out something new, free from client constraints. They’re great for keeping yourself fresh, rejuvenating your creativity. With my design, it was a chance to tackle something I’ve wanted to improve upon; portraits (albeit covered in glitches).
Winning this contest was a great buzz – I had predicted my favourites for the prizes so was amazed to see my name come up.
